Here’s to the Winners! Gratitude for the champs among us

With permission, I’d like to share a personal correspondence from Jeff Selano, whose head is still in the clouds after winning gold while singing tenor with Storm Front:
Look at this photo and it all becomes very clear. We sat down with our wives after Anaheim and said, win or lose in Philly we have to know that we didn’t leave any stones unturned. And that means likely not being home for most of the next 12 months. Way too many weekends, practicing all day Saturday on shows and then staying late Sunday to practice more!! Our wives had to hold down the fort (all of us with small kids) too many times. Through sicknesses and hospital trips, missed special events etc, our wives gave us 1 year to get this done. After that we would still compete, but we would have used up all that “extra grace” we had been given for just 1 year.
I think you can see in this Grady Kerr photo how relieved we are. But it’s not even close to the expression on their faces!!
Just an idea of what goes into these incredible performances we’ve been accustomed to seeing every year. I was amazed by the Four Freshmen in Philly, and I hope I’m taking nothing away from them when I point out that some of our top “amateur” groups are in the same musical league. (The vocal part, anyway. Ain’t nobody but the 4F can sing and play that well!)
How do our best amateurs sing at a professional level? They put in professional-level hours, that’s how. And for putting in that kind of effort on our behalf, for entertaining us as thoroughly as any group on the planet and showing us a level to which we can all aspire, we owe our champs and other competitors a deep debt of gratitude.
So thanks to Storm Front, Westminster Chorus and Swedish Match for putting on an unforgettable show in Philly. And also thank you Old School, Vocal Majority and Prestige, who won silver while working every bit as hard and deserving just as much admiration.
On behalf of those of us who don’t have equal talent and who haven’t put in equal hours, but who reap the benefits from those who have, I say “Thank you!” And thank you to the families and understanding “day job” bosses who accommodate our fine professional amateurs. We only choose one champion each year, but we certainly have a lot of winners among us!

This past week was WONDERFUL! The treks back and forth to the contest venue were effortless, the proximity of Reading Market as a local food service was extra- ordinary, and the whole atmonphere gave off “Family Reunion” vibes!
I agree completely with the “fine professional amateurs” comment and firmly believe the judges did it just about right!

It WAS a great week. The talent and creativity of our best is amazing. I just wish the public, other than those of US who love this, could see how great it is. Beats the hell out of American Idol. Is there any way in the world the chorus competition and quartet finals could find their way to PBS or the A & E Network, or would that be impossible? (or an AIC show) It might help us attract more great talent if there was a way… Just dreamin’…
Roger, maybe we should see if some cable network is willing to show “American Harmony: the Movie”?
Perhaps Lorin May or others in Nashville would know the legal issues here & (or) the costs…but it’d sure be wonderful if that COULD happen. Of course, I’m prejudiced, but I think the general public would be amazed at the talent in our society.
The producers are already in talks to bring American Harmony to TV at some point.

That’s great. Has there ever been an effort to get International on TV somewhere, secure a sponsor and get on commercial TV, or even PBS? Just curious…
My brother retired from the head of PBS for PA. Maybe he could give som,e insite on this subject.
Just wondering.
Doing a TV deal is part of the plan and will hopefully happen at some point. PBS is not necessarily the right outlet, from a financial standpoint.

Can we get some more going on this blog? Isn’t it supposed to be run by the Society?
I hear you Connor. I thought someone from the Society might answer the question on whether we’ve ever tried to get our competition on PBS or commercial TV. It’s not a question meant to criticize, but rather a compliment to the talent we have. Just curious…and would it be our responsibility to find a sponsor or do we sell a network on the idea and then THEY find a sponsor?

Right here. We’re all just kind of buried with Harmony University and recovering from convention.
About your idea for PBS. The Mitch Miller barbershop shows on PBS back in the mid-1990s were organized by the Society (PR & Marketing chief Brian Lynch was instrumental in that), and he will tell you how lucky we were to get them.
Let’s just say there are a lot of things the Society would like to do to get our product in front of a mass audience, and we’re actually far more successful at it than you might realize. (We had a pretty good streak of barbershoppers in national TV commercials, movie appearances, television shows, national magazine and the like over the past several years, and American Harmony, for example.) But getting hundreds of local PBS stations to agree to broadcast 30 HOURS of competition is a hard sell. (ONE hour is a hard sell …)
We can be happy with some of our past successes, and we can continue to dream big. But at the end of the day, the media wants to make money, and until we can show them how barbershop can keep eyes on the screen (ESPECIALLY PBS) for extended periods, we really have no leverage.
