2011 Midwinter to be held in Las Vegas instead of Tucson

It’s not unusual in the world of meetings and conventions that a convention city reserved for one organization’s convention might find themselves in a situation where a different organization with exciting opportunities wants to hold their convention over the same dates. In some cases it’s workable but in other cases it is not. We found the latter to be the case for the Barbershop Harmony Society’s 2011 Midwinter Convention in Tucson, AZ. The city of Tucson came to us and asked if it was possible for us to come the following year (2012) and provided some incentives that would be beneficial for both the attendees of that convention as well as the organization (which ultimately benefits the rest of the membership). We of course did have the right to refuse their offer and keep our dates; but in the spirit of working with the city, we decided to look for an alternative city for 2011. We also discussed this possibility with the local Tucson, AZ Chapter and they also agreed.
We have been approached by the city of Las Vegas in the past about the possibility of holding one of our conventions there. Las Vegas also scores pretty high on our convention surveys on the “where would you like to go for a convention” question. It seemed only natural that we approach them and ask for a bid for our Midwinter convention in 2011. After reviewing the bid packages from several hotels and determining what would be the best situation for our attendees we decided the Riviera Hotel fits our needs the best. Aside from Las Vegas being a major tourist attraction, here are some of the direct benefits you’ll experience as an attendee:
- All hotel rooms will be in the completely renovated “Tower.”
- $99/night rooms all week.
- Hotel and contest/show venue under the same roof (no bussing).
- Plenty of “non-casino” lobby space for singing all day and all night long!
So mark your calendars for Las Vegas, NV in 2011 (January 25-30) and Tucson, AZ in 2012 (January 17-22). See you there!

Anyone know how many people are allowed to sleep in the hotel rooms offered at $99 a night?
Jason – it is up to four in a room (no additional extra person charges).
I will *so* be there. Next, you can work on getting Int’l there. Yes, I know Vegas is hot in July (but, hey, it’s a dry heat). Besides, I bet prices are dirt cheap in the summertime (meaning you might be able to book one of the higher tier venues). And if you never have to leave the building anyway, you’re always in air conditioning…
It’s my understanding that they don’t want conventions over a weekend during the summertime. We’d have to end by Thursday night.
Gaaaah ha ha ha ha ha
Youth Chorus Festival + Las Vegas = win
We thought about the potential concern about the Youth Chorus Festival in Vegas long before a decision was made and consulted several of the travel organizations that coordinate youth festivals as a full time gig. Vegas is definitely on their list of good cities for youth so it really shouldn’t be an issue.
Okay. We’ll try our best not to make the organizations you consulted with look like liars =)
My concern is about smoking. Casinos are pretty much smoke-filled 24/7. Having attended two FWD Prelims in Reno where the venue was in the hotel, and having gotten sick from the smoke twice, I vowed never again to attend a convention in Nevada. I understand that newer hotels have higher ceilings and better ventilation, but from the photos on the website, the Riviera is an older hotel with low (12′) ceilings and tar- and nicotine-covered walls, so count me out. I might be able to stay in a cleaner place, but if the tagging and the contest venue is as nasty as the Nugget’s ballroom in Reno, it will be a toxic environment indeed. The smoke from the casino permeated the entire building, even though the ballroom was several hundred feet away.
In the past I would too have been concerned about the smoke-filled Casinos in Las Vegas. Having just been to a convention there at the Riviera I was surprised to see a marked decrease in the amount of smoke in the hotel, casino and convention center.
The ventilation has improved over the years smoke is really not an issue anymore. Smoking is mainly on the casino floors.
